Mr. Sushil Prakash is an accomplished IT, telecom and digital transformation leader with more than five decades of experience developing innovative solutions and delivering major national and regional projects across the UK, USA, Asia and Africa. His career spans government, banking, telecommunications and large-scale public digital transformation programmes in India and overseas.

Digital India Leadership

Focus: National and international e-governance programmes.

In January 2012, Mr. Prakash was selected as a full-time Lead Consultant to the Government of India for the Digital India Programme. His contributions have been recognised by the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV). From 2017 to 2026, papers based on his work in India were regularly accepted for presentation at successive International Conferences on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV) conducted by UNU-EGOV, offering case studies relevant to other developing countries.

Professional Experience

Scope: Senior public- and private-sector leadership roles in India and overseas.

• 1976–1983 | Government of India: Began his career in 1976 as a member of the Indian Telecommunications Service. Following a two-year probation that included the 1977 Foundation Course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, he undertook a desk-based research assignment in Delhi. In 1980, he received an independent-charge field posting in Goa as Head of State (IT & Technology). His management of technical responsibilities for CHOGM in Goa in November 1983, together with recognition for innovative solutions delivered for the state, led to his first overseas assignment.
• 1984–1996 | Government of India, based in Zimbabwe: Deputed as Project Director, he led a multidisciplinary team on a globally funded project to develop the country’s technical infrastructure. Successful delivery of the initial two-year assignment led to an expanded scope and extensions through 1996, based in Harare.
• 1997–2009 | Bank of America: Resigned from government service in 1997 to join Bank of America as CIO India. He also served on the Bank’s India Management Team and Asia Technology Leadership Team.
• 2009–2011 | Tata Tele Services: Selected as Country Head of the Emerging Technology and Business Innovation Group, with a mandate to replicate his Bank of America record of delivering at least “one innovative solution every year.”
• 2012–present | Government of India: Mr. Prakash’s public and private-sector experience in India and internationally led to his appointment as Lead Consultant for the Digital India Programme.

NITI Aayog, India’s leading public policy think tank, named Mr. Prakash a Mentor of Change for the Atal Innovation Mission in 2017.

Through I-ThinkIndia, where he serves as Founder-Director, Mr. Prakash advises developing nations and Indian states on innovative approaches to digital public services and citizen engagement.

Education

Mr. Prakash earned an MBA in Information Systems from Durham University in the United Kingdom, an M.Tech. in Communication Engineering from IIT Bombay, and a B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Roorkee, now IIT Roorkee.
